The Craftsman
Hi there, I'm Ethan, the Man Behind the Pen
The Story Behind the Pen
Once upon a dark and rainy afternoon, 13-year-old Ethan Rockett observed his father’s friend at work in his wood shop. The elder man worked wonders with scraps of wood. It seemed that whatever his hands touched became art: vases, pens, and toys.
Noting the interested gleam in Ethan’s eye, the craftsman placed a block of wood in the boy’s hands and pointed to the lathe. That afternoon Ethan returned home with wooden pens, bowls, and toys—the work of his own hands.
He was hooked; he knew what he wanted. While other 14-year-old boys thrilled to the feel of riding in the saddle of a new BMX at Christmas time, Ethan’s heart leapt at every knock at the front door, knowing his very own lathe would soon be delivered by UPS.
That day came in December, 2005. Now most any afternoon, you’ll find Ethan, who is now 15, in the garage, attempting a new shape or returning to a former style—works of art emerging from the application of his youthful hands to his lathe.
